March's Spring Conference will consist of two Small Animal Medicine tracks along with an Early Program, "Pet Trusts."

TRACK 1

6 CE Credits

Emergency and Critical Care

Hour 1: Auscultation and Normal Breathing.
In this lecture I will use audio files and graphical audio analysis software to demonstrate how your stethoscope works and the physiology that produces normal and abnormal lung sounds. I’ll then use computer-enhanced video to discuss the basis of how normal dogs breathe to serve as a basis for the following presentation.

Hours 2-3: Respiratory Disease and Emergencies.
This lecture will demonstrate the importance of physical diagnosis of the respiratory system and offers participants a basis for localization and diagnosis of the many causes of respiratory disease. Stabilization of patients with respiratory emergencies will be demonstrated with video.

Hour 4: Fluid Therapy.
This hour will demonstrate the physiological basis of intravenous fluid therapy, ways to optimize fluid therapy for the critically ill, and the most common fluid therapy mistakes made in primary care.

Hour 5: Fluid Therapy continued: Diabetic ketoacidosis and renal failure.
This lecture will apply the material covered in the previous hour to these two challenging medical conditions. Participants will learn why the goal of managing diabetic ketoacidosis is not resolution of hyperglycemia, and why high-sodium fluids like lactated Ringer’s cause unexpected problems in animals with renal failure.

Hour 6: Septic Shock
In this hour I will cover the basis of treatment of septic shock and we’ll go through the protocol used at NCSU for patient management.
